Deskmag Presented the First Results of the Global Coworking Survey 2012

For the third year running, Deskmag has conducted the biggest study of coworking worldwide through its Global Coworking Survey. A total of 2007 people took part in the survey, which was conducted online in October and November.

Deskmag founder Carsten Foertsch presented the preliminary results from the just-completed survey on November 8 at the opening of the Coworking Europe Conference in Paris.
The results show continued growth: average member size has increased, and a third of all spaces plan to expand to a new location. At the same time, the core values of community, collaboration and productivity remain strong amongst the users of coworking spaces. Not only that, but coworkers chose one unexpected word to best describe their coworking space: fun! This is a copy of his slideshow.

Coworking, Part 1

Coworking involves individuals working independently or collaboratively in shared office space. The coworking movement is only a few years old, but it has been growing rapidly — it has roughly doubled in size each year since 2006.

The latest Deskmag Global Coworking Survey shows there are now more than 1100 spaces worldwide and 36% of all coworking space operators who took part in the study said they plan to open at least one new location in the coming year. If all carry out their plans, this would add another 350 coworking spaces to the global total.

Coworking space is an environment designed for more collaborative and productive approaches to working, meeting and innovation. OffBureau is focused on providing creative individuals, companies and organizations around the world with an online experience that allows them to easily work together in creating, developing and releasing ideas, concepts and products faster and better than ever before.

Co-design

The term co-design is now widely used within product and service design fields and according to Penny Hagen and Natalie Rowland refers to an approach to design that “builds on the methods and principles of participatory design, which assumes users are the experts of their own domain and should be actively involved in the design process. Co-design goes well beyond “asking users what they want”. The premise is, that users become actively involved in the design process.”

Participatory Design

Participatory design is a form of user-centered design. Lately, it has been gaining increased traction as a preferred methodology in new product development. In participatory design participants are invited to cooperate with designers and researchers during an innovation process. Potentially, they participate during several stages of the process: during the initial exploration both to help define the problem and to focus ideas for solution, and during development, to help evaluate proposed solutions.

Open Design

Technology is empowering more and more people to create and distribute designs, and professional designers and design aficionados are using it to share their work with each other and the world. Open design and open manufacturing  is becoming fashionable and therefore valuable to brands and agencies. This is changing everything from products to how designers make a living.
